YOGYAKARTA - MICOM: Aceh tsunami ever hit by a much larger when compared with the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in 2004.

"From the research I did in Meulaboh, based paleotsunami sediment, can be seen that ever happened to the giant tsunami in Aceh, about 600 years ago," said researcher Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Dr Eko Yulianto at the Centre for Disaster Studies (PSB) UGM, Yogyakarta Monday (25 / 7).

The data revealed that successful, she said, dismissed the notion that in Aceh was never a big earthquake with magnitude 9.0 on the scale.

"Unfortunately, these findings discovered after an earthquake in Aceh. If it is found more quickly the actual number of victims of the earthquake and tsunami can be minimized," he explained.

Besides Aceh, Eko is also conducting research on the cliffs Cikembulan River, Pangandaran, West Java. From these studies found four layers of sand that became evident early in the region have occurred several times a tsunami.

One was a thick layer of sand deposited on the mud covered with mangroves and flood sediment. In the sand layer contained Foraminifera shells. Above these layers there are several layers having a thickness of about 1-3 cm, one of whom is a former tsunami Pangandaran 2006.

According to him, the findings showed approximately 400 years ago, in this region is estimated to have occurred tsunami much larger scale than the tsunami of 2006. (AU/OL-9)
